Marine Weather Discussion for N Pacific Ocean
NWS Ocean Prediction Center Washington DC
106 AM PDT Sat Jul 21 2018

.FORECAST DISCUSSION...Major features/winds/seas/significant
.weather for the North Pacific N of 30N and E of 150W.

Per the NCEP 06z surface analysis a 1013 mb low was located over
the central PZ6 waters with a low pressure trough extending north
and south from the low center. A high pressure ridge was located
over the rest of the offshore waters. Another low pressure trough
was located inland over California. The latest available ASCAT
high resolution data revealed 20-30 kt winds over the PZ5 waters
with the strongest winds in the southeast part of the waters.
20-30 kt winds were noted over the northern PZ6 waters and parts
of the central waters. An area of gales were observed over the
far northeast PZ6 waters which gels well with the ongoing
forecast.

The 00z guidance continued the good agreement seen in the models
that has persisted over the last several days. With that noted
felt it was reasonable to allow ongoing grids, consisting of the
18z GFS, to continue in this forecast. Ongoing gales still
expected to subside over the northeast PZ6 waters by today as the
pressure gradient relaxes overhead as the low pressure over the
central PZ6 waters and its associated trough continue to move
west, while the high pressure ridge also retrogrades to the west.

.SEAS...Allowed ongoing grids, which consisted of the 18z NWW3,
to remain in this forecast given the choice to continue with the
18z GFS winds.
