Marine Weather Discussion for N Pacific Ocean
NWS Ocean Prediction Center Washington DC
621 AM PST Mon Nov 20 2017

.FORECAST DISCUSSION...Major features/winds/seas/significant
.weather for the North Pacific N of 30N and E of 150W.

No changes are planned for the morning update. The 06z GFS is in
very good agreement with the previous 00z run, as well as the
other models through most of the period. The current warning
headlines also look good as all models are in decent agreement
with the duration and intensity over the Washington/Oregon and
northern California waters. The 06z GFS, similar to the previous
00z run continues to indicate a strong low moving across the
Washington and Oregon waters Saturday. The CMC is similar to the
GFS, while the UKMET/ECMWF are weaker. For the time being will
defer to the ECMWF/UKMET and keep winds below gale. The 12z sea
state analysis indicated that observed seas were about 1 to 3
feet higher than both the WaveWatch III and ECMWF WAM, mainly
over the Washington and Oregon coastal waters. Over the offshore
waters, the observed seas were closer to the model forecast
values. Over the California waters, the observed seas matched up
well with the models. Will make a few edits for the the first
period to account for this, otherwise no other changes planned.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...

The latest model runs are indicating that the cold front
currently across the pz5 waters will move inland later tonight
and early Mon. Still expect gale force winds up to 40 kt tonight
across portions of the pz5 waters ahead of the front. Another low
will then track west of the pz5 waters Mon night and Tue with
more gales expected for the pz5 and northern pz6 waters. Yet
another low is then expected to track west of the pz5 waters Wed
and Wed night. Farther south, mainly light winds are expected
across most of the southern pz6 waters Mon into Thu. The latest
runs of the gfs and ecmwf look to be in reasonable agreement
across the eastern Pacific through early Sat. By Sat the gfs
moves low pressure across the northern pz6 waters while the ecmwf
is weaker with the system. At this time will lean towards the
ecmwf with this system as it is supported by the ukmet. For wind
grids will use the gfs winds through early Sat, then transition
to the ecmwf. Current warnings look reasonable and few changes
should be needed on the next offshore waters forecast.

For wave height grids will also use the ww3 through early Sat,
then transition to the ecmwf wam.

Extratropical storm surge guidance...n/a.
